There are many connections between psychology and the body, but we're rarely willing to explore how that relates to spiritual experience through a scientific lens. Therapy and Spirituality are two points on the same spectrum, and where experiences fall on that spectrum is tied to what's happening in the body. Let me explain.
Our ability to feel what's happening inside our bodies has a direct impact on physical and mental health. When trauma, metabolic disorders, or other dysfunction buffers interoceptive sensitivity through the vagus nerve, we can improve interoception through lifestyle choices and activities. The same activities have historically played a role in spiritual practices around the world.
Somewhere between a lecture and poetry, this video shares how Peak Experience provides a roadmap--a list of values, feelings, and perceptions--that are clinically shown to have positive mental health outcomes.
We can practice at improving interoceptive sensitivity by either quieting distractions or turning up the volume on the signals. It's kind of like improving profit margin.
This poem is about the relationship between our interoceptive felt sense as it relates to different psychological states, from anxiety, depression, and PTSD to flourishing and spiritual experience.
"Normalize mental health" and "everyone needs therapy"!
Is that true? Does everyone need therapy? I don't think so. Here's why.
I would love a community center with a gym, a nutritionist, lectures that educate and inspire, family activities, and holiday celebrations. Opportunitites to dance, play and sing music, participate in theater, celebrate milestones in life and death. Is it possible to recreate [better than] church without asking people to believe stories that are contrary to science or first-hand experience? This "poem" explains how the individualized nature of marketing keeps us from coming together.
What is philosophy about and why is it worth pursuing? I believe academic philosophy is a departure from the original roots of what philosophy was trying to do. Philosophy was a game of using words to explain the ineffable wisdom gained through self-transcendent states of consciousness. Let me explain.
You don't have to believe in anything or take anything on faith. But you can see a pattern that points to some worthwhile practices.
I used to be opposed to the concept of Health at Every Size, but I finally feel like I get it.
Promoting an Intuitive Eating approach to diet, where people are encouraged to "eat when you're hungry and stop when you're full" is irresponsible in a society where metabolic dysfuntion and processed foods inhibit effective hunger and satiety signals.
I believe that it’s possible to make a practice of contemplating paradoxes similar to having a gratitude practice, and that it would result in similar benefits to physcial and mental health.
Here's the longer explanation of a Paradox Practice, along with some examples. Who is studying the physiological impacts of Paradox like those of a Gratitude Practice?
Some blogs make better videos. But my artistic visions are bigger than my illustrative pants. Want to help make some art? These files are production notes for converting my essays into videos. With some help, I think they could be pretty cool.
